When visiting Rome, there are many things to do but you must take the opportunity to explore the incredible range of monuments that have been built over thousands of years. From the mighty Colosseum to the iconic Pantheon, here are seven monuments that you should definitely seek out on your visit:

1) The Colosseum: This huge amphitheatre is one of Rome’s most famous landmarks and was once used for gladiatorial contests and public events such as mock sea battles. It was built in 70-80 AD under Emperor Vespasian and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2) The Pantheon: This ancient temple was built in 120-124 AD by Emperor Hadrian and is still in almost perfect condition today. It is the best preserved of all ancient Roman buildings and is now a Catholic Church.

3) The Trevi Fountain: This beautiful 18th-century fountain was designed by Nicola Salvi and features sculptures of mythological figures surrounded by an ornate Baroque backdrop. Legend has it that if you throw a coin into the fountain, you will return to Rome one day.

4) St Peter’s Basilica: This iconic church is located in Vatican City and is said to be built on the site where Saint Peter was buried. It was commissioned by Pope Julius II in 1506 and was completed over 120 years later.

5) Piazza Navona: This large city square dates back to Ancient Roman times and features a stunning baroque fountain with sculptures of four rivers at its center. It is a popular tourist destination, especially in the evening when the fountains are illuminated.

6) The Roman Forum: This public square was once the political and social centre of Ancient Rome. It houses ruins of several temples, basilicas, palaces and other monuments that were built during the height of ancient Rome’s power.

7) Palatine Hill: Located just next to the Roman Forum, this hill is one of seven hills surrounding Rome. It was once home to wealthy patrician families and is thought to be where Romulus first founded Rome in 753 BC. Today it is an archaeological site that is well worth exploring.

These seven monuments are just a few of the amazing sights and view you can see while visiting Rome. So take a break from Rome’s museums, restaurants and churches and take the time to explore and enjoy all that this incredible city has to offer!
