Genoa, Italy is known for its restaurants and museums but it is also known for its gelato and it’s easy to see why – the creamy icy treats have been made in this coastal city since the 16th century. Gelato is an Italian frozen dessert, typically made from milk, cream, sugar and other ingredients like fruit or nuts. The average gelateria (gelato shop) carries a selection of about 30 flavors ranging from traditional classics like chocolate and stracciatella to adventurous new creations such as ricotta with honey and walnuts.

With so many gelaterias to choose from in Genoa, there’s no shortage of great places to sample some of the best gelato available. Here are five of the top-recommended spots:

1. Gelateria Ponte Stoppani: Located in the centre of Genoa, this shop is close to so many hotels and it is well-known for its large selection of flavours and high quality ingredients. The gelato here is made fresh daily and there are plenty of vegan and lactose-free options available.

2. Ciocco Romano: This popular spot has been serving up delicious treats since 1941, so they must be doing something right! They have a wide array of classic flavours as well as some unique creations like crema di mandorla (almond cream).

3. La Carrafa: Founded in 1868, La Carrafa is one of the oldest gelaterias in Genoa –and it shows. Here you can find traditional flavours like nocciola and pistacchio, as well as more inventive combinations like gianduia (chocolate-hazelnut).

4. Gelateria La Collegiata: This small gelateria is located in the old city centre and has become a favourite of locals and tourists alike. They have an extensive selection of classic flavours but also offer up some unusual concoctions such as limone e menta (lemon & mint) and banana e nocciole (banana & hazelnuts).

5. Grom: This family-run business was founded in 2003 and quickly became one of the city’s most popular gelato spots. They are well-known for their unique flavour combinations and use high quality ingredients. Try the ‘Mantecato’, which is made with a blend of Italian hazelnuts and chocolate.

So why not take a stroll through one of Genoa’s many charming neighborhoods and stop by one of these top-recommended gelaterias? Whether you stick to the classics or are feeling adventurous enough to try something new, you’re sure to find something delicious!
